Concrete strength: what does it depend on?

Determining the concrete strength in structures is a key indicator that affects the quality of the final result. Therefore, during its production, efforts are made to maximize its qualities regarding stability and strength.

What concrete strength classes exist

Such classification allows dividing all mixtures for various types of work.

There are seven main groups in total.

  1. B0.5-2.5. Mixtures of this type are used for implementing structures that will not be subjected to a load.
  2. B3.5-5. This group is used as a cushion before the final foundation pouring and when creating concrete slabs. It is also used to lay road curbs.
  3. B7.5. This is medium-stability concrete. It is used for floor screeds, creating road surfaces, and implementing foundations.
  4. B10-12.5. These mixtures have the necessary strength to withstand the weight of low-rise buildings and structures.
  5. B15-22.5. These are the most universal grades. They are used for pouring foundations, producing retaining walls, or implementing monolithic overlapping slabs.
  6. B25-30. Such options are used for implementing more important structures. With their help, monolithic foundations and crossbars are poured, columns are created, pools are cast, and much more.
  7. B35-60. These are the strongest concretes, which are used to create bridge structures, bank vaults, and other special facilities.

Determining the compressive strength of concrete is done using special formulas or devices. The first option is suitable for calculating the mixing composition. The second option is already suitable for ready-made structures. For each grade of mortar, there is its own production formula and various proportions.

To understand when concrete gains strength, you need to know that this is a long process. The 100% indicator is reached 28 days after pouring. For the mark of 60-80%, you need to wait from one to two weeks. The 30% indicator is achieved in one or two weeks.

What factors affect strength and how to improve it

The main indicators related to strength characteristics provide an opportunity to determine the quality of the concrete mixture.

This list includes:

  • activity of the mortar during mixing;
  • quantitative indicator of cement content;
  • percentage ratio of cement and water;
  • types of fillers and additives;
  • compaction indicators;
  • curing speed;
  • use of vibrational impact.

Various plasticizers can become concrete strength enhancers. They affect its texture and make the mixture more ductile. Therefore, it compacts perfectly and hardens qualitatively. Technical calcium chloride is often used in the role of a plasticizer.

There is also a large number of ready-made products on the market that can combine not only enhancing the density indicator, but also the ability to resist frost, moisture, or other negative factors.

In our "Budprom" store, you can buy plasticizers for concrete and other types of additives at an affordable price.
